It’s always a special occasion when a team brings back a beloved throwback jersey. For the Milwaukee Bucks, that occasion is happening tonight. The Bucks will be wearing their 1977-78 jerseys when they take on the Boston Celtics at 7 p.m. CST. The jerseys were originally designed by Adidas and have been brought back for the 2017-18 season. The story behind the jerseys is an interesting one. In 1977, the Bucks were fresh off of an NBA championship and looking to repeat. They didn’t quite make it, but they did come close, losing to the Philadelphia 76ers in the Eastern Conference Finals. As part of their championship run, the Bucks decided to bring back their original jerseys from when they first entered the league in 1968.
One day back in December of 1968, Lew Alcindor walked into the Dean Smith Center at the University of North Carolina. Sporting a blue and gold jersey, the soon-to-be three time college basketball national champion had no idea that his game day attire would start a sports fashion trend. Fast forward 49 years, and the Milwaukee Bucks have announced they will be wearing their old jerseys for one game this season. The jerseys, which are white with green and red trim, are based off of the jerseys the team wore from 1971 to 1974. The decision to bring back the old jerseys was not made lightly. In fact, the team looked into it for two years before deciding to go ahead with it. “It was something we talked about quite a bit over the last two years,” said Bucks president Peter Feigin.
